Fault finding and repairs

Tripping switches, dead circuits and flickering lights traced to the cause, then put right once you have approved the price.

  • No travel charge on the Island
  • 2 year workmanship guarantee
  • Revised price before any work starts

What it is

Fault finding means testing your installation to trace why something has stopped working or keeps tripping.

A repair cannot be priced before the cause is known, so we price the diagnostic visit first, and any repair is priced separately before it is done.

When you need it

  • A switch in the fuse box keeps tripping
  • Sockets or lights have stopped working
  • Lights flicker or dim
  • The power trips when you use a particular appliance

What our standard job covers

Your estimate spells out exactly what your job includes, so you can check it before you accept.

  • A visit to test and trace the fault
  • A plain English explanation of what is wrong
  • A price for the repair, for you to approve before the work is done

What can change the price

Your estimate itemises the labour, the materials, the certification and any waste removal, so you can see how the total is made up before you accept it. These are the things that most often affect it:

  • How many circuits are affected
  • How easy the fault is to reach
  • Whether the cause is the wiring or an appliance

Your certificate

That depends on the repair. Most repairs to an existing circuit receive a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate; a new circuit receives an Electrical Installation Certificate.

Can it be priced online?

We price the diagnostic visit online from your answers and photos, and fault finding is always checked by Ashton before your estimate is released. Any repair is priced separately once the cause is known.

No surprises

If anything differs from your description, you get a revised price before any work starts, and if you decide not to go ahead we refund your deposit in full.

Burning smell, scorch marks or exposed wires?

Turn off the power at the main switch if it is safe to do so. If there is a fire or anyone is hurt, call 999. Emergency help

Fault finding and repairs: questions

Is it a power cut or a fault?

If your neighbours are off too, it is probably a power cut. Call SSEN on 105, free, day or night. If only your property is affected, check whether a switch in your fuse box has tripped.

What if the fault is in an appliance?

If testing shows the fault is in an appliance rather than the wiring, your electrician tells you, so you can have it repaired or replaced.

Can you fix it on the same visit?

Where the repair is small and you approve the price on the day, often yes. Nothing extra is done without your approval.
